Nine takes photo finish weekly ratings victory despite Seven winning Saturday

Nine has hung on for a ratings victory for the week over Seven by the narrowest of margins.

Despite coming second to Seven on Saturday, Nine managed to pull in just enough of the lacklustre weekend free-to-air audience to claim what was only its fifth weekly ratings win of 2016.

Nine’s best non-news performer was Michael Bay movie Transformers: Age of Extinction, which rated 516,000 across the five capital cities.

Seven had a split schedule, with the AFL women’s exhibition match rating 465,000 in Melbourne and Adelaide, while Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest pulled in a further 224,000 in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

According to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam, Seven won Saturday’s peaktime battle with a 19.9% share to Nine’s 17.8%.

However, it wasn’t quite enough to overhaul Nine’s lead for the week. As a result, Nine ended with a cumulative Sunday to Saturday weekly share of 19.8%, only fractionally ahead of Seven’s 19.7%.

With 27 weeks gone of the offical 40-week ratings year, the win for Nine was its fifth of 2016. Seven has 22 wins while Ten is yet to win a week, although it has fared better in the key advertiser-friendly demographics.

Free to air viewing was impacted by the NRL battle between Cronulla Sharks and Melbourne Storm. The game was only aired on Fox Sports and saw Melbourne claim the minor premiership.

Meanwhile Ten’s animal-themed schedule – including Travels With the Bondi Vet, David Attenborough’s Big Birds, plus movies We Bought A Zoo and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, pulled in an average metro share of just 7.5%, well behind ABC’s 15%.

Earlier in the day, Nine’s Weekend Today narrowly saw off Seven’s Weekend Sunrise by 266,000 to 264,000.
