According to The Sunday Telegraph Seven is set to announce casting for the sporting biopic at its upfronts event next month, and is applying to Screen Australia for funding to make the drama.

Warne, regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, had a spectacular but controversial career, and has become tabloid fodder since retiring from international cricket after a series of high-profile love affairs, starting with British actress Liz Hurley.

He is also known for his love of the party lifestyle.

He currently makes a living as a cricket commentator, working for Nine Network in Australia and British broadcaster Sky.

This year he also appeared on Channel Ten reality show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, with a rumoured $2m pay day, where he caused controversy after slamming former test captain Steve Waugh as “selfish” admitting he did not like him.

In 2008 comedian Eddie Perfect penned Shane Warne: The Musical, which dealt with some of the most noteworthy moments in the cricketer’s career.

The Telegraph suggest Nine Network had also been looking at the script as a follow up to its successful mini-series Howzat: Kerry Packer’s War charting the rise and fall of World Series Cricket.

However Seven, which has enjoyed mini-series ratings success with biopics of Aussie icons such as Molly Meldrum, INXS and Peter Allen in recent years, looks set to be the broadcaster for the show.
