Seven’s BBL Grand Final and Ten’s I’m A Celebrity finale can’t beat Nine offering

Seven’s Big Bash League Grand Final and the finale of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here on Ten were not enough to stop Nine from attracting the largest TV audience share on Sunday.

The Big Bash League match between the Melbourne Renegades and the Melbourne Stars commenced at 2:30pm, and was watched by 475,000 metro viewers for session one and 600,000 metro viewers for session two on Seven, according to preliminary figures.

The innings break, which runs in the middle of the two sessions, captured 567,000 across five metro cities. Confirmed times from Seven report the full match’s average at 502,000 metro viewers, and 732,000 nationally. The grand final average on Ten last year was 912,000.

Fox Cricket had an audience of 287,000 and 342,000 for the two sessions, and a national subscription audience of 319,000 during the innings break, according to overnight figures provided by OzTAM. When including Fox Cricket, the average was 703,000, according to confirmed timings.

National numbers for the two sessions on Seven were 681,000 and 877,000 respectively, while the innings break averaged 827,000, according to overnight figures. Last year, the BBL grand final, which was between the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes, ran on a Sunday and captured 806,000 for the first session and 1.04m for the second session. Ten included the innings break as part of the first session average.

In 2017, Ten’s BBL grand final had an average of 910,000, while in 2016, that number was 1.205m metro viewers.

Later in the evening, Ten’s I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here finale, which runs against My Kitchen Rules and Nine’s Married at First Sight, achieved 684,000 metro viewers for the show, and 894,000 for the moment when Richard Reid was crowned winner. Nationally, the program had an audience of 959,000 while 1.233m tuned in for the winner announcement.

The winner announcement was up on last year’s, which had 872,000 metro viewers, but down on last year’s finale episode audience of 696,000.

Seven’s My Kitchen Rules, which ran against I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, pulled 905,000 metro viewers, and 1.328m nationally. But no show was able to conquer Nine’s reality juggernaut last night, which had a metro audience of 1.291m and a national audience of 1.705m.

The show topped all key advertising demographics – 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Outside of sport and entertainment, the most watched show of the night was Seven News, with 960,000 metro viewers over Nine News’ 935,000. ABC News pulled a metro audience of 628,000.

Earlier on in the day, ABC’s Insiders was the most watched breakfast program, with 285,000 metro viewers ahead of Seven’s Sunrise, with 227,000 metro viewers and Nine’s Today, which had 196,000 metro viewers.

Thanks to Married at First Sight and news, Nine won the night with a 24.2% share and a network share of 32.9%. Seven’s share was 18.4%, while its multi-channels boosted the network to an average of 26.8%. Ten just beat the ABC with a 12.8% over ABC’s 12.2%. But the ABC beat Ten from a network perspective – 17.2% over Ten’s 16.4%. SBS’ share was 4.8%, while its network had a share of 6.7%. Seven’s free to air share outside of prime time was 22.6%.
