Simon Ryan joins Carsales as MD of commercial
After announcing his resignation as the CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network this morning, Simon Ryan has been appointed as Carsales’ commercial managing director.
Before becoming the CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network in 2016, Ryan was the CEO of Carat for six years.
When announcing his departure from Dentsu Aegis Network, Ryan flagged he would be taking a “senior outside the network”.
Ryan’s appointment at Carsales follows Anthony Saines’ resignation as its commercial managing director. Saines had been in the role for almost two years and joined the company 10 years ago.
Outgoing commercial managing director, Saines, said he is a “good friend” of Ryan’s and is looking forward to working with him during the transition period.
“It’s been an absolute pleasure to be part of an energised, talented team that is so committed to delivering excellence to our clients in Australia and across the world,” Saines added.
Cameron McIntyre, who was promoted to Carsales CEO in June last year, said in a statement: “I’m very pleased to welcome Simon to Carsales. He is an excellent cultural fit and his capability, experience and knowledge of the media industry and our market make him an incredibly valuable addition to the team.
“As we continue to evolve and realise our business potential it’s critical we are attracting and retaining the best talent available and Simon is a clear representation of that.”
His appointment comes eight months after Carsales added two new recruitments to its commercial team, hiring Lauren Smith as head of product media, OEM and corporate and Jodie Smith as head of sales NSW, QLD and WA.
Ryan said he has had a strong personal and professional relationship with Carsales for many years.
“This opportunity represents a combination of living my passion for cars in a business I see has substantial opportunity.
“I’m looking forward to playing a big part in Carsales’ future. My experience over many years in media and communications positions me well to support the business in the delivery of its strategy and growth potential.”
Ryan will continue to lead Dentsu Aegis Network while it searches for his replacement.
Perfect fit.

Congratulations to Mr.Ryan for securing what would have been a highly contested appointment. Not sure the same will be said of his replacement. Whilst Mr.Ryan did an admiral job at DAN, the sector is going through significant change and challenges. I only hope Nick Waters doesn’t do the obvious and finds someone to lead from the front.
