The Smurfs 2 takes more than $2m on its opening weekend at the local box office
Animated sequel The Smurfs 2 has had a respectable opening at Australian cinemas for distributor Sony taking $2,041,555 across 462 screens, according to figures from the Motion Pictures Distributors Association of Australia.
The film opened in the US at the end of July and has taken more than $200m worldwide already. It was made on a budget of around $105m. The Smurfs 2, which features the voices of Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria, was the strongest opener for the weekend. Roadshow’s Scifi offering Riddick starring Vin Diesel also opened this weekend on 186 screens where it made $1,307,853, a screen average of $7,031 compared to The Smurfs 2 which had a screen average of $4,418. However Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, distributed by Hopscotch/eOne and starring Cate Blanchett, beat both films on screen average taking $1,073,332 across 126 screens to give it an average of $8,518.
But the most unimpressive performance for an opening film across the weekend goes to Universal’s R.I.P.D which continues its run of tanking after failing to impress audiences in the US. It opened on a whopping 254 screens but made just $510,029, an abysmal screen average of $2,700.
