Stan’s CEO Martin Kugeler talks the success of its pay-per-view product

Stan Event premiered its boxing heavyweight clash, “Turf War” – headlined by two of the biggest names in Australian sport, dual rugby international star Sonny Bill Williams who knocked out AFL  premiership winner Barry Hall at the ICC Sydney last night.

And today, Stan CEO, Martin Kugeler told Mumbrella it’s a fight worth talking about, as the platform gears up its pay-per-view offering on Stan Event.

“The first boxing fight was with Barry Hall and Sonny Bill Williams last night. Boxing and pay-per-view so far, had only one place in Australia where you could watch live fights, which was Main Event,” explained Kugeler.

“When we launched Stan, I think every boxing promoter in Australia and even internationally, came to us and was looking to see if there was an alternative to Main Event.”

Kugeler said the streaming platform had a lot of conversations around when the right time was to launch the pay-per-view Stan Event product.

“We were really waiting for the right fight, and it was the fight of Sonny Bill and Barry Hall, two iconic sports figures with a big following, but very serious about their boxing sport, so we felt that was the right time to launch.”

Stan Event pay-per-view works as an additional revenue stream for Stan that is based on existing assets, a live platform where people can stream and watch sport.

“This means it’s not only for the active 2.5 million active subscriber base, but also the inactive, where, it’s easy for them, one click of a button to activate and buy that fight,” he said. “If you want to show pay-per-views, it’s important you have a pubs and clubs product.”

“In November, we launched the pubs and clubs product to make it easier to access pay-per-view fights. Traditionally, a pub or club would have to have a set-top box with Foxtel or Sky Racing infrastructure set up,” he said. “We now offer an over-the-top media service, where you only need internet and a Smart TV device and Stan Event subscription to be able to access live events. This was an important product to have ready and on offer before we were able to launch pay-view-view.”

Turf War is promoted by Green Machine, led by four time world champion Danny Green, together with Khoder Nasser’s SBW Promotions, and will also feature a stacked undercard with at least five professional bouts in the lead up to the highly anticipated main event.

Turf War is Stan’s first pay-per-view event and was available to stream for subscribers for $50.

Danny Green said: “Turf War presents an incredible match up of two ultra determined athletes who have proven themselves in the boxing ring. It will be a spectacle not to be missed when these two behemoths square up on Stan’s brand new pay-per-view offering. A win will open up huge opportunities for one of these guys.”
