Sydney Film Festival launches; NSW invests $4.2mil for 20 new projects
Minister for the Arts, George Souris, announced 20 new Australian films and TV programs secured for NSW, at the opening night of the Sydney Film Festival last night.
The Government will invest $4.2 million in these 20 projects which include new productions by Academy Award winners Jane Campion and Emile Sherman as well as Wayne Blair’s The Sapphires.
“The productions will generate hundreds of jobs and see some of our top film and television creators, cast and crew working in NSW,” Mr Souris said.
Seven feature films, two television series, two children’s animated series and eight documentary programs help make up the 20 projects.
If you’ve won an Academy Award do you really now need to go to Screen Aust for development funding??
It is heartening to see the government invest in productions by novice, struggling filmmakers/producers like Jane Campion and Emile Sherman. They really do need our support to hopefully, one day, be successful. I know winning an Academy Award, especially for best picture, that they would not have much support in Hollywood. A King’s Speech has barely made $400 million which, of course, is a dismal failure. I really hope that one day, with Australian taxpayer-funded support, that battlers like Jane Campion and Emile Sherman will be able to afford to feed their families.
Funding should be restricted for emerging talent otherwise we would never see the likes of David Michod, Jon Hewitt, etc..
Jane Campion films are comparable and of much interest as music in elevators..in her case going down..
