Sydney Opera House to host the SmartFone Flick Fest Gala 2018

The Sydney Opera House is proud to welcome SmartFone Flick Fest (SF3) to the Playhouse for a gala evening on Monday 1 October honouring the best and brightest voices in short filmmaking. Members of the public will be able to see this year’s entries, rub shoulders with industry insiders and shortlisted finalists at the Gala plus have their say in the SF3 People’s Choice Awards, announced the following week.

Now in its fourth year, SF3 is a celebration of modern filmmaking and provides a platform for creatives to bring their ideas to life without the need for expensive equipment or big budgets. Emerging and professional filmmakers from around the world are invited to submit their short film for consideration by a panel of industry specialists; the only requirements are that films must not exceed six and a half minutes in length (including credits) and must be shot entirely on smartphones or tablets.

The deadline for entries has now been extended until 11.59pm, Wednesday 8 August and winners in the 11 categories will be announced at the gala event. The 2018 finals will also feature the return of the popular SF360 category with mind-bending 360 and VR films. This year’s celebrity judges will include leading Australian playwright Louis Nowra, director/screenwriter Megan Riakos and actors Ros Gentle, Nicholas Hope and Sue Smithers.

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Performance Programming, Olivia Ansell said: “Most of us carry a portable media powerhouse 24/7 without ever really exploring what a smartphone can do. The SmartFone Flick Fest is the perfect vehicle for unleashing that curiosity amongst burgeoning and experienced filmmakers of all ages and skill, fostering imaginative storytelling, six minutes at a time. The Sydney Opera House is extremely proud to present the SmartFone Flick Fest Gala in its fourth year.”

SF3 Co-Founders Ali Crew and Angela Blake said: “Smartphone filmmaking has burst into the mainstream in recent years, with many TV shows and feature films in the US shooting on smartphones. Each year we’re wowed by the quality of films being submitted into the festival. The technology, apps and editing software that are out there mean the quality of films being produced is staggering.”

Festival Ambassador Nicole da Silva said: “This is the new wave of filmmaking and is something all cinema lovers will appreciate – it’s a short, sharp feast of film.”

As part of this year’s SF3, there will be a series of Shortlist Screenings around Sydney, including the top ten SF3 Kids entries. For more details about these events, please visit sf3.com.au.
