Telstra brings back its ‘billboard of love’ to Melbourne for Valentine’s Day

Telstra has erected a giant ‘Billboard of love’ in downtown Melbourne for people to post messages to their loved ones on Valentine’s Day.

Melburnians can send a text message to ‘0499 My LOVE’, which will be put up on the 26-metre billboard on the corner of Bourke Street Mall and Swanson Street. An image of the message on the billboard is then texted back to the sender.

The telco expects around 30,000 messages to go up today and tomorrow.

Telstra staged the stunt last year, when 70 per cent of the messages broadcast were by men.

Telstra’s general manager of brands Natalie Dean said in a press release: “Traditionally the perception is that men approach Valentine’s Day with a bit of fear and trepidation, but it seems through the Billboard they are able to come out and show that someone special how much they mean to them.”

“Every Valentine’s Day we see a spike in SMS and MMS traffic on our network as customers send cute pictures and declarations of love across Australia. Last Valentine’s Day we saw a six per cent increase in text messages and a 35 per cent increase in picture messages compared to previous years”

“The billboard is not only for couples in love. Over the past few years, we have seen Aussies sharing their love for parents with mums getting the love nearly twice as much dads in 2012,” she said.
