Temu is already one of the largest retailers in Australia

Chinese e-commerce superstore Temu already has more online retail customers in Australia than Coles, Bunnings, or the entire Flybuys loyalty program.

This is according to the latest Ipsos iris data, which found that almost 21.1 million Australians aged 14 and above used a retail or commerce website or app during May.

Amazon, Apple, and Woolworths were the busiest online retailers during the month. Aside from eBay, currently the fourth biggest online retailer in the country, all the top ten brands have seen increased customers year-on-year during May.

Not surprisingly, given its place as the fifth most-popular online retail brand in Australia, Temu enjoyed the biggest leap in customers year-on-year with 39.7% growth. Just a year after its launch to an impressive 8.1 million local customers, it more boasts over 11 million monthly users.

Coles Group also enjoyed an 18.8% increase, while Flybuys saw a healthy 11% bump.

In the retail sub-sections, the largest growth month-on-month was in the ‘flowers’ category, thanks to May 11 and Mother’s Day. Online flower purchases jumped by 28.6% compared to April, and by 21.2% compared to February – surprising, given flower-favourite Valentine’s Day falls during this month.

Restaurants and pubs websites and apps also saw their biggest audiences for 2024 in May, to more than 5.9 million people, up 5.8% on April, and no doubt the remnants of pandemic booking behaviour.
