Ten claims 20% increase in Tenplay views over past year
Ten has achieved its biggest year of online video viewing to date, claiming audience growth of 20% on Tenplay from 2016 to 2017.
New numbers released by Ten claim digital platform Tenplay recorded 264.77m video segment views (up 20%) and a 58% increase in live streaming.
Tenplay’s highlights include Masterchef Australia, which had 29.2m video segment views, an 11% increase year on year and Neighbours – which grew its online audience by 32% to 27.6m.
Meanwhile, The Bachelor Australia achieved 26.2m video segment views, up 35% from the year prior, while The Bachelorette Australia – starring Sophie Monk – climbed by 64%, to 20.7m segment views. Ten said this is the highest online video segment viewing for any Australian show.
Total unique visitors were up by 2% year on year, from 29.302m to 29.870m.
Network Ten’s general manager, digital, Liz Baldwin, said the success was led by an appetite for Ten programs. She was particularly delighted to announce catch up records including The Bachelorette Australia.
“We have seen significant growth on our lean-back platforms due to the soaring popularity of consuming content via connected televisions. We have strategically launched on new platforms, including Samsung, Android TV and Telstra TV 2. We will continue to roll out on select new platforms in 2018 to ensure audiences can access our fantastic programming when they want and where they want,” she said.
20% increase in views not viewers.
Very odd for a media company to be reporting analytics based UVs over a year – ridiculous amount of duplication in there.
Aren’t there independent metrics for this stuff via OzTam or the IAB?

Thanks Metrix,
You’re quite correct and we’ve amended the headline to read ‘views’ not ‘viewers’. There are independent metrics and we’ll report on them as they become available.

Congratulations Tenplay.
In 2017 you managed to reach 20% more people than live in Australia. Fix your metrics.

Yeah that stood out to me as well…
Total Australian population 24.1m. Total claimed unique viewers on a largely geoblocked service 29.8m. :S

“Claims” = unvalidated, most likely wrong, we had someone with no context pull numbers

Regarding the population comment, I’d look up how the IFABC defines what a unique user is defined. A simple google search and wikipedia page states that.
“An IP address plus a further identifier. The term “unique visitor” may be used instead of “unique user” but both terms have essentially the same meaning (see below). Sites may use User Agent, Cookie and/or Registration ID.” Note that where users are allocated IP addresses dynamically (for example by dial-up Internet service providers), this definition may overstate or understate the real number of individual users concerned

Should probably change the first sentence too “Ten has achieved its biggest year of online video viewing to date, claiming audience growth of 20% on Tenplay from 2016 to 2017.” The views grew 20%, the audience grew 5%.

Would be nice to know if or when Season 8 of Blue Bloods is going to be aired on Channel 10. They’re already halfway through the season on CBS in the US. Sick of watching re-runs.
