Ten returns to late night news with current affairs-entertainment hybrid Newsnight
Ten is to return to late night news, less than a year after withdrawing from the battleground.
Newsnight will be hosted by Hamish Macdonald and air at 10.30pm from Monday to Thursday.
The reversal of strategy echoes that carried last year when the network axed its 5pm weekend news bulletin before returning to it after Nine jumped into the vacant slot.
Newsnight launches on Monday June 4. The new program appears to stretch from traditional news territory into light entertainment including musical performances.
Network Ten’s head of news and current affairs, Anthony Flannery, said: “It will cover the staples of news bulletins, such as headlines of the day, breaking news, sport, weather and finance. But Ten Newsnight will also include features such as live interviews, entertainment, and segments that use social media to reveal what people are talking about and what will be the next day’s big stories.”
Sports presenter Brad McEwan will also be part of the lineup.
All sounds a bit ‘Project’ , at this rate Channel 10 will be back to back Project style shows with Masterchef on for an hour

Ten reversing strategies – what a shock ! Late Night News and Weekend Bulletins are back, maybe Video Hits will return as well ? It seems that management are recreating history back to it’s roots of good solid programming that makes money – what an interesting startegy.Who axed each of these programs in the first place ?

What a dogs breakfast…….Throw together elements of 10 programs and lassoo it together as one format. The TEN network used to be such a wonderful alternative from 7 and 9 now I just cringed at the entire debacle….A press release from 10 signals nothing but trouble.

Clearly the reason Hamish has been utilised on The Project so frequently of late. He’s a great talent and I hope it works for both him and Ten. I forsee the forthcoming projects “I Will Survive” and “Come Date With Me” will fail epically. They should bring back some of the decent comedies and drama from Eleven, and stop running so much vintage crap on Eleven.

Channel 10 really need to look at their ‘Talent’ and ‘News’. This is just an extension of ‘the project’ which to be honest I only watch if Hamish is on as he is the only unbiased news presenter on the whole network. Seriously watch Charlie or any of the other presenters, it makes me cringe how awfully biased they present each story.
Clearly they think if they put some ‘personality’ into the news with lots of ‘opinion’ it makes it more interesting. Can someone go and slap Anthony Flannery and let him know the format doesn’t work, it hasn’t worked and it won’t work. All they will do with this next attempt is ruin Hamish reputation.
Hamish I hope the big $$ are worth it.
