Ten signs HG Nelson and Roy Slaven to present their Russian Revolution
Channel Ten has signed one of Australia’s favourite sports comedy duo Roy Slaven and HG Nelson to present a nightly show during the Sochi 2014 winter Olympics in partnership with Samsung Electronics.
‘Roy and HG’s Russian Revolution’ will be broadcast live from Russia and as part of Ten’s Olympics coverage and then be available to see on the dedicated Samsung Stadium app.
The pair will also present a daily half hour comedy show for the Samsung app called “The Ice Stream”, which will later be uploaded to Ten’s digital platform Tenplay.
Nelson will also appear on the panel show that opens Ten’s prime time coverage, Sochi Tonight, presented by Stephen Quartermain and Alisa Camplin.
David Barham, Ten’s head of sport, said in a statement: “Roy and HG are a key signing for Ten. They are proven medal winners, they bring vast Olympic experience and we are looking forward to their insights on Russian culture.”
Samsung is a worldwide partner of the Olympic Games and Arno Lenoir, chief marketing officer for Samsung Australia said it was fitting to bring the commentators back for the winter games of 2014.
Nelson said: “It’s a dream come true to be back at the Olympic coalface. There is no greater thrill in the world of sport than seeing young, fit Australians wearing the green and gold standing on the top step of the podium, wearing medals and grinning.”
And Slaven added: “Ten has given us a great opportunity to look closely at the new Russia and to catch up with old friends newly released from prison. This will be a great games for our Australian winter superstars like Dale Begg-Smith and to unearth new stars the world is yet to hear about.”
Roy and HG presented sports comedy talk show The Dream every night during the Olympics in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, which became one of the most popular events of the Games. They returned to the format to present the Wallabies Test Games in June last year on the Samsung Stadium app.
Great news – great talent. Hope its as funny as the last games show.

Hope its an improvement from the cringeworthy commentary of Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy at the last Winter Olympics. Embarrassing.

Honestly, is this the best we can do in 2014….. it’s always the same old same old. There are some young sports commentators around that could really give us some serious insight in a fresh and amusing way but these guys are not funny. They are so dated and their accents are exaggerated and annoying…Channel 10 appears unable to take a chance….on anything.

Well I’m really excited but I have a horrible feeling this won’t be a ratings winner. I hope I’m wrong. Kudos for the app and catch-up component too.

Fantastic!
I look forward to hearing some more hilarious commentary on various sporting moves that include; ‘tightening of the nut’, ‘cutting the rug’ and thats just the skating!

They fell a bit flat last time they did it. A bit of a disappointing and unimaginative programming decision for me.

Terrific news. Sorry Janice, none of the younger generations of sports journalists could hold a candle to Roy and HG. They have provided hours of entertainment in the past and are still one of the best in the business. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Excellent!
I just wish Roy & HG would GET BACK ON THE RADIO to do their “The Life/This Sporting Life” gig. ABC, somebody? Get them back on air! No idea if they want to, but they should. Hopefully they will re-appear on the dial sometime this coming winter 🙂

So can we expect more redneck jokes from the 1970s when the skating is on, like with Malloy and Mcguire last time?

This duo are painful to listen to … Mute the tv ! Their commentary is dated and any attempt at wit fails miserably… And please… Show the athletes the respect they deserve and have earnt.

These blokes are brilliant and the pretty much commentary worth listening to. Very experienced and very amusing to watch.

I’ve tried watching these two a couple of times this week but I’ve had to hit the off button each time.
Embarrassingly unfunny!
