Tennis and cricket battle for viewers in Tuesday night ratings

The second night of the Australian Open on Seven had 663,000 metro viewers tuning in to see Australia’s 18-year-old Alex de Minaur defeated by Tomas Berdych, according to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings.

The Australian Open managed to out rate session one of Ten’s Big Bash League, which ran from 7:30pm, with 617,000 metro viewers tuning in to the cricket.

Despite being beaten by the tennis in total people, the Big Bash League was the most watched program across key advertising demographics 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54, according to OzTAM.

Due to session two of the cricket wrapping up earlier than anticipated, Ten’s numbers for the Big Bash differ from OzTAM’s. According to Ten, session one of last night’s Big Bash attracted an average audience of 615,000. Session two had 673,000 and the post-game programming averaged 308,000.

With help from the tennis, Seven won the night scoring a 21.7% overall audience share, beating Nine’s 16.6%, Ten’s 14.8%, ABC’s 9.6% and SBS’ 5% share.

The most-watched program for Tuesday night was Nine News with 937,000 metro viewers as it beat rival program Seven News’ 840,000 viewers.
