The AFL season launch kicks off with over 500k metro viewers

Seven’s AFL season kicked off on Wednesday night with Melbourne smashing the Western Bulldogs in an epic opening round of the 2022 AFL Premiership Season.

The game aired to a metro audience of 548,000 metro viewers, with the game coming in second spot in key demos, 16-39, and 18-49.

Last year, the AFL season kicked off to 668,000 metro viewers, with the AFL Grand Final breking records, becoming the biggest TV audience of the year. The footy game saw 3.006 million metro viewers tune in to watch the Melbourne Demons defeat the Western Bulldogs by 74 points, ending a 57-year wait for a premiership.

Fox Footy shared strong ratings to get the season underway. The Melbourne Demons v Western Bulldogs AFL season opener saw an average audience on Foxtel and Kayo of 458,000 last night, up +25% on the 2021 AFL season opener (366K).

The game was the highest rating AFL regular season match of all-time on subscription television, up +3% on the previous highest rating regular AFL season match (R12 2021, Adelaide v Collingwood, 445,000).

In the latest Daily Consolidated Total TV Report for 9 March, Wednesday’s episode of MAFS was the #1 program nationally across linear, with 2.038 million viewers, including 509,000 on BVOD and an uplift of 45%. This was also the program which had the biggest uplift.

Looking back at Wednesday’s ratings, Nine’s Married at First Sight also topped overall night and entertainment ratings with a metro audience of 930,000.

Seven’s The Chase Australia was next in entertainment, pulling in 504,000 metro viewers, followed by an episode of ABC’s Hard Quiz.

Nine’s Under Investigation aired to 396,000 metro viewers, while ABC’s Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell saw 387,000 metro viewers tune in.

As mentioned, MAFS were the #1 metro program on Wednesday, airing to 930,000 metro viewers, followed by Seven News with 920,000 metro viewers, while Nine News had 816,000 metro viewers.

Nine won the night, taking an overall network share of 33.1% over Seven’s 29.6%, while Ten took a 15% share and the ABC had 14.9%.

Nine also won the primary channel share, and the top-rating multi-channel on Wednesday was 7TWO 4.1%.
