When The Age was announced as winner in the 90,000+ circulation category, editor-in-chief Paul Ramadge told the audience Churchill was too modest to come on stage with him. Applause from the audience then persuaded him to do so.

Churchill, chief executive of Fairfax Media’s Melbourne publishing operation and publisher of The Age, retires at the end of the month. Ramadge said: “I’d like to pay special tribute to Don Churchill. Humble, a leader, and someone who led his team to success.”

Churchill told Mumbrella: “I do have a bit of a book in me, about the industry mainly. My 46 years in the industry has been exciting. I’ve met lots of interesting people, some of whom I think should bless the pages of a book which I think is inside me.”

Churchill’s career has spanned Australia and New Zealand. He began as a journalist which included editor of Wellington’s The Evening Post from 1981 to 1987. He was also GM of The Dominion Post, The Christchurch Press and The Nelson Mail, and deputy GM of Wellington Newspapers.
