The Australian sneaks into Ipsos top news website rankings in June, news.com.au remains unbeaten

More than 20 million Australians used a news website or app in June, with major events here and abroad driving strong traffic, the latest Ipsos iris rankings show.

The country’s number one site for the six consecutive month was news.com.au with an audience of 12.65 million.

While that figure was down 4% on the previous month, it represents a gap of 2 million with its nearest competitor ABC, which attracted 10.63 million visitors – down 6.8% month-on-month.

Coming in at third was nine.com.au with 10.45 million visitors, down 5.9%. At fourth was 7news.com.au with 10.04 million visitors, down 0.8%, while Daily Mail was fifth with 7.99 million visitors, down 10.4%.

“The devastating Hunter Valley wedding bus crash dominated headlines in June, but it was also a big month for international news with the missing Titanic submersible and the Wagner uprising against Russian President Vladimir Putin,” news.com.au editor-in-chief Lisa Muxworthy said.

The site saw its time on site remain steady at 33 minutes per person on average. Aside from ABC on 35 minutes, that number is miles away from most other sites, with nine.com.au seeing users spend 16 minutes per month on site, for example.

A big mover in the month was The Australian, entering the top 10 for the first time with a 7.3% surge to 4.37 million visitors.

The Australian’s editor-in-chief Michelle Gunn said: “The Australian’s strong audience growth reflects its ground-breaking reporting and its informed economic, social and business analysis which is helping our readers make sense of the mega trends changing our world.”
