The Hunter leads AACTA Awards nominations

The Hunter has lead the AACTA Awards with 14 nominations including best film.

The film, by Daniel Nettheim, is also up for best direction, adapted screenplay, cinematography, sound, production design, costume, original music score, and visual effects. Meanwhile, Willem Dafoe, Frances O’Connor, Sam Neill and Morgana Davies are all up for acting awards.

The film has currently made just over $1m at the local box office.

It’s the first year for the re-launched AACTAs, formerly the AFI awards.

The technical awards will be given out at a luncheon on 15 January at the Sydney Opera House, with an evening ceremony for the more ‘public-friendly’ awards held at the Opera House on 31 January.

Running against The Hunter for best film is Red Dog, Mad Bastards, The Eye of the Storm, Snowtown and Oranges and Sunshine.

The Eye of the Storm, was second in the nominations race with 12, of which six are for outstanding performances fro Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis, Charlotte Rampling, John Gaden, Helen Morse and Alexandra Schepisi.

Justin Kurzel’s Snowtown received 10 nominations including best direction for Kurzel, cinematography, editing and original music score, which received best feature film score award for Kurzel’s brother Jed at the Screen Music Awards.

Red Dog has been nominated for eight including best direction and adapted screenplay. Oranges and Sunshine is up for seven including editing and costume. Mad Bastards is up for five nominations including  best original screenplay for Dean Daley-Jones and director Brendan Fletcher, Greg Tait and John Watson.

In the Television section, Cloudstreet, Paper Giants, The Slap and Sisters of War are all nominated for best tele feature, miniseries or short run series.

East West 101, Offspring, Rake and Spirited all have episodes nominated for best TV drama series.

In the best television comedy series, At Home with Julia, Laid and Twentysomething all got a look in.

The Gruen Transfer, Hungry Beast, Judith Lucy’s Spiritual Journey, Junior Masterchef and RocKwiz are all nominated in the light entertainment TV Series category.

The AACTA Awards Luncheon will be held on Sunday 15 January at Sydney’s Westin Hotel. The AACTA Awards Ceremony will be held at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 31 January.
