The Invisible Man opens to $2.527m, toppling Sonic the Hedgehog at the weekend box office
After two weekends at the top of the Australian box office, Sonic the Hedgehog has been topped by debutant horror film The Invisible Man.
Starring Elizabeth Moss as a woman being stalked by her ex-partner that staged his own suicide, The Invisible Man drew $2.527m across 322 screens. Meanwhile, Sonic the Hedgehog, the live-action take on the classic Sega video game character, experienced a drop of 37% from its previous weekend taking $1.746m from 300 screens.
The running total for Sonic in Australia has now surpassed $9.3m.
Australian film, Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears, also opened over the weekend, earning $1.04m from 376 screens. The film stars Essie Davis as the titular character, and comes off the back of the television series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries which ran on the ABC for three seasons. The series is based on the author Kerry Greenwood’s historical mystery novels.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) maintained to hold onto a top four position over the weekend, earning $607,275 in its fourth weekend from 270 screens. After debuting to $3.850m, the film’s running total is now $10.01m.
After failing to top Sonic the Hedgehog last week, Harrison Ford-fronted The Call of the Wild, came in fifth with $518,989 from 262 screens.
Emma, the latest film rendition of the Jane Austen classic novel, took $434,277 in its third weekend at the box office from 262 screens.
Multi-Oscar award winner, Parasite had its 36th weekend at the box office, earning $363,336 from 140 screens. Parasite has now amassed an Australian box office total of $5.217m. Meanwhile, WWI epic, 1917, earned $380,108 from 228 screens, reaching $22.3m in Australia.
Rounding out the top 10 was Bad Boys For Life, earning $289,664 from 148 screens in its seventh weekend, and Fantasy Island with $188,884 from 193 screens.
