The King's Speech takes out top award at TIFF

Australian/UK co-production The King’s Speech has won the Cadillac People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Directed by Tom Hooper and played by an all-star cast (Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham-Carter), the period drama received a standing ovation at its premiere on September 10 and is already generating Oscar buzz.

The Cadillac People’s Choice Award is voted by the festival audience.  Previous winners include Academy Award-nominated Precious and Academy Award winner Slumdog Millionaire.

Producer Emile Sherman (See-Saw films) said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been voted the audience favourite at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival. It’s exciting to see this relatively unknown story about the unconventional friendship between the King of England and the Australian who helped him find his voice, really resonating with audiences around the world. The production was a real collaboration between the UK and Australia and we look forward to releasing the film in Australia on Boxing Day.”

The King’s Speech will be released by Paramount/Transmission on Boxing Day.
