The Monthly and Good Weekend writers Ben Naparstek and John van Tiggelen trade places
Journalists John van Tiggelen and have swapped publications.
Good Weekend writer van Tiggelen has joined The Monthly as editor, as The Monthly’s editor Naparstek is set to take the editorship of Good Weekend in February.
Van Tiggelen has written for Fairfax’s Good Weekend since 1999 and will join independent politics, society and culture title The Monthly – a title he has written before as a contributor – on 30 January.
Naparstek was unveiled as the new editor of Good Weekend in December, five months after the departure of previous editor Judith Whelan was announced.
Lauren Quaintance, managing editor of Fairfax Magazines, has been acting editor of Good Weekend during the search for a replacement for Whelan.
The Monthly publisher Morry Schwartz said: “John is one of this country’s leading longform journalists and literary stylists. Under his watch, I’m confident that The Monthly will continue to go from strength to strength as Australia’s premier magazine for fine writing and in-depth stories.”
Dumb question, but why didn’t Fairfax simply appoint Van Tiggelen ed of GW? Sorry to say, but the GW gig’s far more prestigious than The Monthly (that absolutely nobody reads save for the three people who write for it and Kevin Rudd when he’s in it.)

Correct KD – Dumb Question. 122,000 people read The Monthly and of all magazines distributed in Australia The Monthly consistently benefits from double digit circulation growth.

Ahhhhh, the ever arcane “readership” figures!!!!!! So what you’re saying is that 42,000 people read each issue sold?

Those Fairfax magazines are in dire need of overhaul so it’s hardly a prestigious gig any more. GW boring and Sunday Life is now officially dreadful, Marieke Hardy column on Sunday appalling.

@ No Way. Totally agree… Still, 500,000 people read GW a week, so it still has some pull. The problem for Fairfax appears a distinct lack of advertisers, so the mags seem thinner than Peter Garrett’s hairline at the moment (but I’m sure that problems not exclusive to its insert magazines either.) And yes, totally agree on the Mariee Hardy column yesterday. Awful.
