The Social PR Consultancy launches
A new public relations agency has launched focusing on the rapidly-blurring boundary between PR and social media.
The Social PR Consultancy is fronted by Sarah Thomas, who previously worked for the UK-based Carve Consulting where she worked with clients including the South Australian government, Wine Australia, Visit Britain and Hardys.
She told Mumbrella: “I believe I’m in a good position to help organisations navigate their way through this new era where they realise they now can’t ignore social media any more, but need help integrating it.
“My aim is to remove the distinction between traditional PR and social media. It is just one more channel – and a great one at that – for communicating with an organisation’s audiences.
As well as traditional PR services, The Social PR Consultancy, which is based in South Australia, will offer social media monitoring, training for clients, strategy advice and SEO.
Meanwhile, The Social PR Consultancy commissioned a survey of Australians’ use of Facebook at work. It suggested that 35.5% of employees use the site while at work, with 2.3% of the 1000 who took part in the online survey saying that they use it more than two hours a day while at work.
Across Australia, Canberra was the city with the highest usage of Facebook at work, with 54% of workers saying they spend at least 15 minutes with it. Adelaide is the lowest, with 17.1% saying they do so. A total of 46% of those in Adelaide said Facebook was banned in their workplace.
There’s a boundary between PR and social media?
I’d suggest any PR practitioner NOT involved in social media today has a very short future in the PR industry.

If they are giving advice on SEO they should 1. Purchase a .com.au domain and not a .co, even though it fits with their branding its a international TLD, local TLDs assist with ranking 2. Host their website in the country where their target demo is not Singapore, Hosting in australia would be advisable…

Best of luck with the new consultancy, Sarah.
Great to see new businesses outside of Sydney and Melbourne getting some exposure.

The distinction that needs to be made between PR and Social Media.
PR – you talk at customers
Social Media – You talk with people

Hmm, I can’t seem to easily find Sarah Thomas’ social media footprint – so how can they advise clients if they don’t actively use social media?
Could be worth reading a recent post of mine:
“Does your company or agency need to hire a social media expert?” at http://lc.tl/smex before you invest in a “social media specialist/expert”

Thanks Tim and others for your best wishes. I totally agree with you Scott – good point – a lot of clients/organisations still separate the two though.
Cheers

Good luck with it.
Would be good to see a different angle from your agency.

Does Sarah know she can insert her Twitter link in the Website section and actually get some links happening? I thought that would be better than posting it in the comment?
I’m a social media novice, but thought that was 101? Please correct me if I’m wrong.
