Tomorrow, When the War Began: highest grossing Aussie film of the year
Stuart Beattie’s directorial debut Tomorrow, When the War Began has taken more than AU$7.7 million dollars at the Australian box office since its September 2nd launch- making it the highest grossing Australian film of the year.
Adapted from the novel by John Marsden, the film has also brought in NZD$840,000 at the New Zealand box office, a number expected to rise in the coming weeks. “We are looking forward to a successful school holiday period and hope that the film will move on to a much bigger box office” commented Mike Selwyn, Paramount Pictures Australia MD and VP Australia/New Zealand.
There is currently no date set for an international release, however Tomorrow has been screened to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival. Executive producer – Christopher Mapp said: “The film was hotly pursued by distributors at Toronto and we look forward to announcing details of international sales soon.”
And although no official plans for a sequel have been announced The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit wrote: “Plans are being drafted for Stuart Beattie to return to write and direct the second and third installments of Tomorrow, When the War Began.”
Speaking to Encore in August, Mapp explained there is no minimum box office result that would guarantee production of a sequel. ““I won’t be able to give a number on that, because it will be a blend between box office success, foreign sales and the DVD, which won’t be that long down the track. The social media out there is certainly strong enough to suggest that DVD numbers will also be reasonably strong.”
Tomorrow, When the War Began has over 50,000 fans on its Facebook page.
Tomorrow is being distributed by Paramount Pictures in Australia and New Zealand and is currently screening in cinemas nationally.

I enjoyed this movie. Not quite as compelling as the book, but then screen adaptions of books rarely are. It was surprisingly good and the young Aussie actors played their roles very well and were very believable as the characters in the book, which I didn’t think would happen. A very enjoyable movie
