Trolls debuts at number two at weekend box office but can’t beat Fantastic Beasts

Dreamworks’ Trolls opened in second place at box office over the weekend, raking in $2.52m in earnings.

The animated film features the voices of Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick and Zooey Deschanel and tells the story of Poppy and Branch as they go on an adventure to save their village.

Since opening on December 1, the film has achieved a total of $4.162m in earnings.

Despite the success of the animation over the weekend, JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them dominated for the third consecutive week, taking $3.252m at box office.

The film has made a total of $23.238m at box office.

Underworld: Blood Wars managed third place in its first weekend box office, earning $1.545m across 328 screens.

The horror film, directed by Anna Foerster features Kate Beckinsale as a vampire ‘death dealer’ in a never-ending war.

Sci-fi film Arrival slipped to fourth place over the weekend, earning $576,712 at box office.

Arrival has made a total of $6.273m since its first weekend at box office in early November. 

The Founder, a biographical drama about Ray Kroc, the man who created McDonald’s, dropped from second place last weekend to fifth place this week, earning a total of $552,703.

The film made $877,513 in its first weekend at box office and has achieved a total earnings of $1.833m.
