TV ratings wrap: Australian Ninja Warrior premieres to 1.040m, ahead of Farmer Wants A Wife’s 908,000

The networks can finally get a picture of the performance of their latest reality tentpole programs, with Nielsen and OzTAM releasing Sunday night’s figures.

Going head to head in primetime was Australian Ninja Warrior’s premiere on Nine, Farmer Wants A Wife’s debut on Seven, and episode five of Bachelor in Paradise on Ten.

Ninja won the battle, with an overnight metro audience of 1.040m, ahead of Farmer’s 908,000 and Paradise’s 434,000.

It appears Farmer’s audience skewed slightly older, however, with Ninja topping the three key advertising demographics of those aged 16 to 39, 18 to 49, and 25 to 54. In the 16 to 39s, Paradise and Ninja tied with 191,000 apiece, ahead of Farmer’s 163,000. In the 18 to 49s and 25 to 54s, however, Ninja was approximately 100,000 viewers ahead of Farmer, and even further ahead of Paradise.

Nine’s program director Hamish Turner said the results were pleasing.

“Ninja was clearly the destination of choice for 25 to 54s and family audiences on Sunday night,” he said.

“Nine had a very strong audience share on Sunday night and dominated the commercial shares. The sentiment on social media has been positive and we think the audience have responded well to the Power Tower. We look forward to seeing the show continue its ratings momentum in the weeks to come.”

With the addition of regional viewers, Ninja had an average audience of 1.376m. Farmer proved more popular in regional Australia, jumping above Ninja to a total figure of 1.4m.

Seven’s programming director Angus Ross said it was a strong debut.

“It’s clear that Australians have fallen in love with Farmer Wants A Wife, with a great launch and strong audiences, particularly in the key demographics and in regional Australia. Farmer has also continued our strength in BVOD, with solid numbers for its first two episodes. We’re excited about continuing to share this much-loved show with our audiences over the next few weeks,” he said.

In sport, Seven’s AFL had 432,000 across Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, while Nine’s NRL had 274,000 from Sydney and Brisbane.

Seven News had 1.307m for the night, ahead of Nine News’ 1.129m.

The premiere of Ninja helped Nine to it’s first win since Tuesday, 14 July, with an audience share of 25.7%. Seven had 20.0%, ahead of the ABC’s 13.1% and Ten’s 9.1%.

With the addition of multi-channels, Nine Network climbed to a winning 32.7%, ahead of Seven’s 29.1%, ABC’s 17.1% and Ten’s 13.4%.
