‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil moves from ARN to 2GB

Veteran radio broadcaster ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil has stepped down from his role at ARN’s GOLD101.7 to pursue his dream of talk radio, joining Nine’s 2GB and 4BC in 2025.

O’Neil has spent over 40 years in the industry, working across some of Australia’s largest radio networks, including shows on Nova 96.9, Triple M, 96FM, and Star 104.5. He also hosted the Hot30 Countdown on Austereo, and has dabbled in presenting talk shows on 2UE and London’s LBC.

In his new role, O’Neil will host Overnights every Tuesday-Friday.

“WSFM GOLD101.7 has been more than just my radio station for the last four years, it’s been my second home,” O’Neil said.

“I’ll definitely miss the laughs with my fantastic co-workers and also the listeners who have become such great friends. Heck…I might even miss playing Roxette!!”

But he said all the roads he has travelled, have led to this moment.

“There are no finer radio stations to pursue my talk radio aspirations than at 2GB and 4BC,” O’Neil continued. “This really is the most exciting and pivotal moment of my career.”

Sue Carter, ARN’s head of content – GOLD network, said: “Phil is one of a kind, I’ve known him for decades and over that time I’ve seen his passion for radio only get stronger. When he told us he had an opportunity to host an overnight program on 2GB, we didn’t hesitate to release him of any contractual obligations.

“While we’ll miss him on air, we’re excited for him as he embarks on this next adventure. We send him off with our best wishes and a huge thank you for everything he has brought to the station.”

Nine Radio’s content manager, Greg Byrnes added: “Phil will bring fresh energy to overnights and is an exciting addition to our new lineups in Sydney and Brisbane. He’s engaging, entertaining and has a loyal following. Phil loves talk radio and our early morning listeners are going to love him.”

O’Neil’s final show at GOLD101.7 will be Friday, February 28. His replacement will be announced soon.

Overnights with Phil O’Neil will be aired Tuesday-Friday, starting March 4.
