Unbranded version of Telstra’s Down Under ad used to rally Australia’s Olympians
Telstra’s Olympics ad featuring Men At Work’s Colin Hay singing famous anthem Down Under has been used in a special screening to rally Australia’s Olympic team.
An unbranded version of the ad was played to the whole Olympic team just after Australia’s flag bearer was announced.
The ad was created by DDB Sydney and took eight weeks to produce.
It was filmed in seven different locations in London, including the Thames river and Regent’s Park.
Brilliant lump in the throat stuff. Well done Telstra!

This song always makes me laugh, Just hope everyone keeps on bopping with the beat and the soft vegimite interpretation.
When explaining the real meaning of the words, it is fantastic seeing the face of a primary school nun / teacher about to supervise a school group dance with this song.
fried up zombie – on drugs
I come from down under, women blow ( fellaito ),
( this word is officially now glow but you had to be in the pubs when this song was sung live in the 80’s)
men plunder, ( war like rape, & steal goods )
men chunder ( vomit )
Just hope that those with lumps in throat and choking up are now all cleared!
If you want another example problem of this just tell your local prim and proper Coles manager that the Down Down song is about a sex act!

It is such a romping tune who cares what the words suggested back in the day at the pubs. It has morphed into a great anthem, especially for expat Aussies like my daughter who is in the footy crowd belting it out!

The best ad of the Olympics so far! (even Beckham couldn’t deliver..)
Nothing like a bit of ole larrikinism, crowd chant and optimism that only an Aussie crowd can deliver.
Well done DDB, Mark, Elise and team involved – ‘connections’ indeed!

Love the advert, but really find it difficult to understand that people keep putting it down because of the words in the song. British Airways Olympic ad is using the Clash and London calling, but again people are moaning because of the words. Both these songs are fantastic as rallying cries for the nations.

My son Charlie (10 years) just loves the ad, and wanted me to record it from the TV, so glad I found it on the internet!
Actually we all love it, a great song, lyrics and filming.
