WA releases short film marketing guide

ScreenWest and Perth’s Film & Television Institute launched Short Film Marketing: Producer’s Guide,  to assist emerging filmmakers with their short film efforts.

CEO Ian Booth told Encore that the guide was developed to ensure local filmmakers are well informed about marketing and distribution of short films.

“ScreenWest staff researched the current information and guides available in Australia and internationally online, which identified that a comprehensive and up-to-date guide was needed to assist emerging filmmakers,” said Booth.

The guide was created by ScreenWest and FTI staff, in consultation with West Australian practitioners and producers with experience in the field. A number of websites and documents were also referenced in its creation.

“Short films are a great training ground for filmmakers to hone their skills with the view to progressing onto longer form productions including series and feature films,” explained Booth.

“It’s crucial that all producers and directors have a sound knowledge and appreciation for marketing and distribution to ensure that their film reaches a wide audience. A quality short film with a strong marketing plan may reach the attention of a sales agent and draw a moderate profit. More realistically, a well marketed short film will gain recognition for the key creatives, act as a calling card for the filmmakers and lead to further work.

The guide includes:

  • Why create a marketing strategy and what to include.
  • Promotional activities.
  • What to include in a press kit.
  • Links to useful websites.
  • Other helpful tips.

The guide can be downloaded from the ScreenWest website.
