Wayne Bailey steps up at News Ltd

News Ltd has promoted Wayne Bailey into the role of national production director.  

The announcement:

News Limited’s national production director George Calvi today announced the appointment of Wayne Bailey as deputy national production director.

Mr Bailey is currently production manager at the News Limited’s print centre at The Mercury in Hobart, a facility he has managed throughout its building and the installation of new presses.

In his new role, he will work to improve the production processes at News Limited’s 12 print sites nationally and in Papua New Guinea, increasing efficiency and Implementing new systems.

Mr Bailey started his career in 1976 as a compositor at The Mercury in Hobart and has since held a variety of roles with the company, including IT manager, pre-press manager and building facilities manager.

Mr Calvi said Mr Bailey was an exceptional manager who has successfully led his production team through wholesale cultural and practical changes.

“Wayne has implemented a range of practices in Hobart which have helped us to produce some of the highest quality print in the world. Not only that, the output there is more than double that of the old facility,” he said.

Mr Bailey comes from a long line of newspapermen who have collectively chalked up approximately 200 years’ service with News. They include his father Viv, who was a sub-editor at The Mercury and uncle Kev who was the cartoonist. His cousin Garry is current editor of The Mercury, while another cousin, Scott ‘Boo’ Bailey, is an artist with The Daily Telegraph.

Mr Bailey said he was looking forward to the challenges of his new role. “Our print sites around the country have some of the best equipment and technology, so the next phase of development – refining our processes – is an exciting and important one,” he said.

Reporting to Mr Calvi, he takes up his new role next month and will based in Sydney.
