Weekend AFL helps Seven snatch weekly win as Ten’s Masterchef tops 16-39

The strength of AFL over the weekend helped Seven come from behind to win the ratings week.

After lagging behind Nine for metro primetime share throughout the week, wins on Friday and Saturday were enough for Seven to snatch the win.

Saturday saw Seven take a metro share of 22.6%, well ahead of Nine’s 13%. ABC was third with 13.7%

It meant that for the week, Seven finished with a share of 19.4%, just ahead of Nine’s 17.9%. Ten was on 14% and ABC 11.4%.

Seven’s Saturday Night Football dominated metro audiences in Melbourne, with 305,000 watching the AFL clash between Essendon and Geelong. A further 140,000 watched the game on 7Mate in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

A further 176,000 viewers watched the game on Fox Footy across the five capital cities.

In Adelaide, 162,000 tuned into Seven for Adelaide vs Melbourne.

And 201,000 watched the GWS vs Collingwood AFL clash on Fox Footy while 109,000 watched St Kilda vs Carlton on Fox Footy.

Menawhile, Fox league had three NRL games, with Storm vs Titans rating 182,000 metro viewers; Sea Eagles vs Broncos drawing 166,000 and Panthers vs Warriors 112,000.

The most watched program of Saturday was Seven News which rated 835,000 metro viewers, followed by ABC News which rated 764,000. Nine News was just behind on 743,000.

Ten’s only program in the top 15 of Saturday night was Eyewitness News which rated 320,000.

It was an unusually strong night for SBS, with 350,000 tuning in for the semi final of the Eurovision Song Contest.

As a result, SBS was fourth on Saturday, with a share of 8.2%, ahead of Ten’s 7.5%.

In the key advertising demographics, all three of the major commercial networks will have drawn some cheer.

Seven’s channels won the battle for primetime share in total people, 16-39, 25-54 and grocery buying households with children

Nine and Seven shared the honours for full day share in the key demographics.

And Ten was able to claim Tuesday’s Masterchef as the most watched show of the week among 25-54s, while Ten’s Have You Been Paying Attention topped 16-39.

But Nine’s Monday episode of The Voice was top for the week in grocery buying households with children, while Seven News Sunday topped total people.

The week just gone also saw Ten return to a more competitive performance, finishing second behind Seven, and ahead of Nine, in the 16-39 demographic for the first time since the ratings year began.
