‘You’re just a phone call away from your own career-ending headline’: Tracy Grimshaw takes aim at media misbehaviour

Tracy Grimshaw used her acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement award at the Kennedy Awards on Friday night to fire “a shot over the bow” at those misbehaving in the media industry.

“I applaud the efforts currently being made to address the issues at our network – and, I hope, at others,” Grimshaw said, referring to the widespread allegations of sexual harassment and bullying at Nine that led to an external review of the company.

“Let all of this be a shot over the bow over anyone in any workplace anywhere who still thinks it’s the wild frontier land out there,” she said.

“Because the truth is you’re just a phone call away from your own career-ending headline now. The jig is up, so cogitate on that.”

Grimshaw made sure to mount a defence for “the 98% of people, including the blokes in this business who are thoroughly good humans doing their jobs” during her speech.

“I worry that the message out there is getting distorted,” she said of the focus on the bad actors,” she continued.

“As we all digest the seemingly endless litany of stories and allegations around abuse of privilege and power in our industry, I despair at how that must be landing out there, where it matters, and how much damage it’s doing to that trust.

“I want them to know how many good people there are in this business and not to judge us all by the two percenters.”
