1.1m Socceroo fans tune in for the worst breakfast of all time
More than a million Australians got out of bed for Monday’s 4.30am Socceroos game, according to overnight metro ratings from OzTam.
In SBS’s biggest TV audience of the year, an average of 1.1m people tuned in to the disappointing 4-0 thrashing of Australia at the hands of Germany.
Along with nearly half a million people for the Netherlands-Denmark game, Monday saw SBS reach a free to air viewing share of 8.1%.
The Queen’s Birthday Holiday in most states of Australia also appeared to boost viewing across the board, with Ten’s Masterchef pulling in more than 1.9m viewers. Good News Week reached a series high of 1.4m, while The 7PM Project broke the 1m mark again, helping Ten to a win for Monday night.
Masterchef also dominated Sunday night’s viewing, pulling in nearly 1.7m viewers, in a day narrowly won by Nine thanks in part to the performance of Underbelly (1.4m).
Meanwhile, Seven narrowly won last week, with a 6pm-midnight share of 24.6%, just ahead of Nine’s 23.6% and Ten’s 21.7%

Proving that Football (soccer) is not only Australia’s biggest sport played by the people but also watched by the people!!
On Sydneys northern beaches there are a few thousand registered league players verses well over 15k registered soccer players…
It is only a matter of time.
germany were always going to beat Australia. Fingers crossed (without Cahill) the Aussies will go on to win a game.

1.1million only?
So ~2% of all the viewers of the game were at Darling Harbour at 2am? This figure seems very dodgy to me.
Does OzTam select a panel and then monitor their televisions, is there a variable multiplier to account for the fact that many people view sports socially – in large groups at a single household, outdoors at pubs etc

I wonder if all 1.1m of them were, like me, thinking: “I wish they’d ban the bloody Vuvuzela and I wonder why Optus have chosed to feature a tiger in an ad about a tournament in Africa?”

@ skeptic … OzTAM only counts “in home” viewing. The cost to accurately measure pubs, clubs, Darling Harbour etc. would be astronomical for the few events a year that would change the ratings (Melbourne Cup, Grand Finals, Olympics, World Cups etc.)
@ Adam. Last Friday afternoon I was walking my dog through the local (Inner West) park and the school was having “Sports Friday” on the soccer field. Down behind the far goals 14 kids were playing soccer. Next to them 9 kids were playing rugby league. On the soccer field Auskick (AFL) was in full flight with around 60-70 kids. And yes of course I am an AFL fan which is why I raised this – but you would think that with the World Cup starting this weekend that FFA would have been pro-active. AFL is killing it in the schools!

Although 1.1 mill’s impressive how does that compare with an Olympic opening or equivalent? I’d say the numbers were based on the uniqueness (and rarity) of a world cup rather than the game’s popularity. Even I watched it and I find the game, in all truth, a bit of a bore. PS I dread to think what it’ll be if we get spanked again on the weekend.

1.1 milliion ? That only proves that it not that popular, given the ratings for both Rugby, League and AFL during their semi final periods.( And two of these sports cant really claim to be national).
I too live on the Nthn Beaches and am amazed at the 10 + teams each soccer club has in each grade from u6 upwards versus the 2-3 we have in rugby. (not to mention the girls that are also playing now).
Cant help but wonder why the A league ratings aren’t better.???
I think some BOYS move on from soccer once they can argue with thier mothers and seek a more physical competition to play in.
Ban the Vuvuzela , I had to turn over to the golf. That broadcast was much easier to listen to ecspsecially with my sleep deprived hangover.
