2014 Annual: the best video ads

It’s been a big year in advertising with brands looking for new ways to differentiate – here we bring you some of the best TV ads from 2014.

Arnold Schwarznegger for Realestate.com.au

This year’s biggest celebrity endorsement came in the form of Terminator star Arnold Schwarznegger for Realestate.com.au. The campaign sees the mega-star confuse Australia for his homeland Austria and instruct his assistant to help him find a new home.

Bondi Hipsters for Vittoria Coffee

The Bondi Hipsters’ work for Vittoria Food & Beverages’ Espressotoria Coffee Capsule System is just gold. Their take on the hipster coffee culture is spot on and with lines like “Our baby chinos are made with real baby tears” and “coffee is an art form and art shouldn’t be accessible to everybody” this campaign can’t be missed.

Primo Bacon’s American Beauty ad

This pastiche of Kevin Bacon’s American Beauty is brilliant, even if it is a little bit gross due to the sheer amount of bacon. The spot adapts the scene in Sam Mendes’ film where Mina Suvari is showered with rose petals while lying naked, with bacon replacing rose petals, and a man replacing Suvari. It ends with a woman’s voice interrupting the tranquil music and drags him back to earth where he is enjoying a bacon sandwich. Now, where’s my bacon sandwhich?

Cancer Council’s ‘I touch myself’ project

This is a beautiful campaign which saw a group of high-profile female singers have come together to re-record Chrissy Amphlett’s I Touch Myself in a bid to highlight the need for women to regularly check themselves for breast cancer. It followed on from the death of Amphlett to breast cancer and was a heart-touching tribute to her and to women everywhere who have been touched by breast cancer.

NRMA Insurance spot for its home insurance

In a spot that sees a family preparing to leave for a holiday when the father leaves a window open, viewers expect the worst when voices can be heard watching from the bushes. But they turn out to be possums. It’s fun and conveys the product NRMA Insurance is highlighting.

Aldi’s liquor Christmas campaign

This is a great campaign from Aldi spruiking its alcohol deals ahead of the holiday season. It’s funny, lighthearted and features an awful Christmas sweater – what more can you want?
