23,700 Sydneysiders attended Taste of Sydney

Last weekend’s Taste of Sydney event drew more than 23,700 Sydneysiders.

The announcement:

More than 23,700 Sydney food lovers grazed their way across Centennial Park, over four gastronomically indulgent days at Taste of Sydney in partnership with Electrolux 2015. Sydney’s hottest restaurants, pop up bars, masterclasses, demonstrations and live music took over the park from Thursday to Sunday for the city’s favourite foodie event.

Sydneysiders created their own degustation menu selecting from over 70 dishes with everything from steamed prawn dumplings to Texas style pork belly and purple potato gnocchi to rare Glacier Toothfish. Those with a sweet tooth savored desserts such as white chocolate & caramel popsicles; carrot, yogurt & liquorice; and salted caramel éclairs.

Those looking for something new to try might have stumbled across bacon flavoured bourbon, tea vodka, morello cherry mustard or even Abalone flavoured macadamia nuts.

Taste of Sydney Event Director Simon Wilson said “Taste of Sydney in partnership with Electrolux had yet another great year; the atmosphere in the Park was buzzing all weekend long with Sydney foodies doing what they do best – enjoying great food. Bring on 2016, we’ll be scouring Sydney for the hottest, greatest and latest restaurants and producers to bring together in the park again next year.”

The title partner of this year’s event, Electrolux Senior Brand & Trade Marketing Manager, Sheila Walthoe said, “We’re thrilled to have been part of an event that supports and celebrates the professional chefs who are leading the future of Australian dining. We hope Sydney’s foodies learnt some great chef secrets from the Electrolux Taste Theatre and have left feeling inspired to experiment with new recipes and cooking methods which give them great tasting food.”

The 2015 line-up included Sydney’s hottest pop up Out-boned, Biota Dining, 4Fourteen, Porteño and the collaboration between Newtown icon Bloodwood and craft beer gurus Young Henrys, Young Bloods. Joining them were coastal legend Jonah’s, Melbourne imports MoVida and Pei Modern, and new Bangladeshi street food offering BANG.

The Cut, Saké and Ananas, all members of the acclaimed Urban Xchange, Café Paci and Buffalo Dining Club were also serving up delicious delicacies. Rounding out the 2015 line-up were TurkishEfendy, Italian restaurants Otto Ristorante and Popolo and sister restaurants Bentley Restaurant and Bar, Monopole and Yellow.

Pop-up bars, Sammy’s Travelling Roadhouse, Jack’s Bar and the Time Out Hop-Up kept visitors hydrated and entertained with sweet tunes through the afternoon and into the evening.

Those looking to expand their culinary skills enjoyed live cooking demonstrations in the Electrolux Taste Theatre from 22 culinary experts throughout the weekend including Colin Fassnidge, Matt Wilkinson and Mark Jensen.

Gastronomes also savoured classes in the Victorinox Chef’s Skillery from leading Australian Chefs, weaving magic in the Lurpak Cooking School or venturing on a European escape with food and wine pairing masterclasses from Celebrity Cruises.

Best in Taste was awarded to Biota Dining for Best Dish with their incredible Smoked Taramasalata –including pickled lettuce & charcoal cracker. Italian favourite Popolo came in a close second with their vegetarian delight Purple Potato Gnocci with mixed mushrooms, chilli, pinenuts and salted dried ricotta.

Bloodwood’s Fermented Redbean Chicken served with salted cabbage and beanskin was deemed equally as fantastic as 4Fourteen’s White Chocolate & Caramel Popsicle with dark chocolate crumbs; meaning third place was a well-deserved tie.

But as every keen diner knows, it’s not just the food that makes a restaurant special (but don’t tell the chefs that). Selected by food journalist and host of the Electrolux Taste Theatre, Kate Gibbs awarded this years’ Best Dressed Restaurant to MoVida!

If you can’t wait another 12 months for Taste of Sydney don’t fret, Taste of Perth is just around the corner (15-17 May), and Taste is returning to Melbourne in November.
