2Day FM launches digital race to track and win a Holden
2Day FM is to launch what it claims is an Australian first which will see Kyle & Jackie O Show listeners racing around the streets of Sydney trying to avoid capture to win a car and $10,000.
The game will see them download an app for their iPhone or Android that allows them to be GPS tracked.

The challenge will be for players to avoid their opponents from getting close enough to them to capture the imaginary car from them.
The prize is a Holden Cruze.
The competition begins next Monday.
2Day FM content director Derek Bargwanna said in a press release, “This is an absolute ‘first in entertainment media solution’ from Southern Cross Austereo designed exclusively for Holden.”
Starcom Mediavest Melbourne is the media agency behind the promotion.
This is a direct rip off of the “Mini Getaway” iPhone app. Even down to the promo video:

Although it’s not done as well.

“This is an absolute first…” – No it’s not, they can thank Mini Cooper in Sweden for this idea.

hmm…
seems like a exact copy of the Mini in Stockholm Getaway chase!
But then again, I am sure Holden can claim Australian First!

Also pretty similar to the Ray Ban campaign…

Nice try though.

I can’t remember the name of the show, but in the UK some years ago there was a gameshow just like this (think it was in the 90’s) – the contestants had to avoid being ‘captured’ or found – like a hide & seek game – each week they went without being captured, they won cash – members of the public were urged to ‘dob them in’ on their location. Revival of an old concept, but still cool all the same, wish they were doing it in Melbourne – love a good ‘treasure hunt’

You have to love it got made locally, yet again awesome work from the guys at Snepo who built the app!

i recall in the late 80’s radio stations had a hide and seek contest where a car was driven around by a station staffer and clues to his whereabouts were given. You would crack the clues to find the guy and when given the cue bolt up and give him the broadcast code word to get one of the 20 keys, and then all key holders met at a shopping centre for the big reveal to see which key opened the car, and the holder of that one got the car.
We stalked the radio station headquarters and followed the guy out of the car park and to his ultimate destination (on a number of occasions) where we would pounce when the announcer called it. Ended up with a quarter of the keys, but alas no win….karma maybe.
In this case concept is the same, technology just makes the execution different. We seem to be desperate these days to claim everything as bright and shiny and new, even if it’s a stretch. Who cares if things are a first if they are good ideas, well done and deliver results. Instead of announcing a cool new competition that utilises new technology they ignite a debate about who was first….not the fault of the commenters, but the client who spun it that way.

Sounds like someone could get hurt or run over

I hired a Holden Cruze once. I certainly wouldn’t be spending my time chasing after one in the hope of owning it 😉

Stealing an idea from MINI is one thing, but bragging on mUmBRELLA about a stolen concept is even worse. Poor effort seriously…

Interesting comments, all quite valid but not terribly useful, it strikes me that this is what John was talking about in his last article: http://www.australiancreative......blog-sites
