7Mate and GEM fail to sparkle on opening weekend
Seven and Nine’s new digital channels 7Mate and GEM failed to make a major dent on their first weekend on air.
According to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam, the channels were ninth and tenth for Sunday night in terms of audience share.
However, the channels are not yet available in all markets.
Channel share:
- Seven – 23.5%
- Ten – 20.1%
- Nine – 19.3%
- ABC1 – 19.3%
- G0! – 4.6%
- SBS1 – 3.5%
- One – 2.7%
- 7TWO – 2.5%
- 7Mate – 1.1%
- GEM – 1.0%
- SBS2 – 0.7%
- ABC2 – 0.5%
- ABC3 – 0.5%
- ABC News 24 – 0.3%

I was loving the Free To Air TV choices on the weekend. Loved 7mate!

I don’t think these channels are designed for ratings success, if that were the case there would be more investment in content. These channels are focused on getting specific demographics to watch and then enable advertisers to send messages that are really targeted and specific, and therefore more valuable. These channels don’t need massive ratings to make money, just a specific demographic.

More channels doesn’t equate to more viewers; it’s simply spreading Australia’s exisiting viewers across primetime sporadically. Glad to see the advertisements will become demographic specific but it seems like a lot of work for little return (from a network POV).

Don’t care about what demographic I’m in, don’t care about ratings (other than these things impact viability). All I know is that my TV stayed on 7Mate for almost the entire weekend. It may also be worth noting a quick poll of my friends and peers found at least as much support for 7Mate from women and a fair amount of contempt for Gem from those same girls (except some of them were thrilled to have more SITC). Wow, all of a sudden I feel like a member of a target demographic 🙂 Extra kudos to 7Mate for the excellent Bathurst Marathon. I’ll even excuse the timeslot, though it would have been nice to have more warning the show was coming (I feel your pain, Mark).
