AACTAS look at name change for Raymond Longford Award as nominations open

The AACTA Awards have opened nominations for the Raymond Longford and Byron Kennedy Awards. They have also introduced a proposal to rename it the Longford Lyell Award.

AACTA is now calling for recommendations for two of the nation’s most coveted and prestigious screen excellence Awards – the AACTA Raymond Longford Award and the Byron Kennedy Award.

Both Awards will be presented in Sydney early 2015 at the 4th AACTA Awards, and recommendations for both are due by 5pm Friday 10 October 2014.

AACTA RAYMOND LONGFORD AWARD

Named in honour of the great Australian film pioneer, Raymond Longford, this Award was first presented in 1968 and is the highest accolade that the Australian Academy can bestow upon an individual. The Award recognises a person who has made a truly outstanding contribution to the enrichment of Australia’s screen environment and culture.

Australian icons bestowed the AFI Raymond Longford Award include Geoffrey Rush, Fred Schepisi, Ken G. Hall, Jan Chapman and David Stratton, to name a few. Since the launch of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) in 2011, three recipients have been bestowed the AACTA Raymond Longford Award – Don McAlpine, Al Clark and Jacki Weaver.

This Award attracts substantial media, public and industry interest, and its presentation is a highlight event on the Australian screen industry calendar.

To submit a recommendation for the AACTA Raymond Longford Award, please provide a letter detailing your chosen candidate’s achievements and your thoughts on why they should be considered for the Award. Please also provide a copy of the candidate’s CV or brief filmography.

Recommendations must be emailed to Awards Manager, Chloe Boulton, by 5pm Friday 10 October, 2014.

AACTA RAYMOND LONGFORD AWARD NAME CHANGE PROPOSAL

New to this year’s AACTA Raymond Longford Award is a proposal to change the name of the Award to the AACTA Longford Lyell Award in recognition of Raymond Longford’s partner in life and filmmaking, Lottie Lyell. In addition to her outstanding acting career, Lyell was also Longford’s co-producer, co-writer or sole writer, film editor, production designer, and, mostly uncredited, his co-director. This change of name was requested by a number of AFI | AACTA members, and we are pleased to put forward this proposal for member consideration. For more information on this proposal, click here. BYRON KENNEDY AWARD

The Australian Cinematographers Society was bestowed the Byron Kennedy Award at the 4th AACTA Awards The Byron Kennedy Award celebrates outstanding creative enterprise within the film and television industries and is given to an individual or organisation whose work embodies innovation and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

Presented by Kennedy Miller Mitchell, in association with AACTA, this Award includes a cash prize of $10,000. The recipient is selected by an appointed jury annually.

Byron Kennedy Award recipients include filmmakers and film festival founders such as John Polson, through to those at the cutting edge of film technology/computer graphic imaging (Animal Logic), and multidisciplinary filmmakers such as Ivan Sen.

The most recent Byron Kennedy Award honoured the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) under the stewardship of Ron Johanson ACS OAM for its enduring and pivotal role in the pursuit of excellence throughout Australian cinema.

To submit a recommendation for the Byron Kennedy Award, please provide a copy of your chosen candidate’s filmography along with a letter detailing the candidate’s achievements and your thoughts on why they should be considered for the Award.

Recommendations must be emailed to Awards Manager, Chloe Boulton, by 5pm Friday 10 October, 2014.
