ABC and Nine win election night ratings bragging rights

The ABC won the audience battle for TV coverage of the cliffhanger election on Saturday night.

ABC1 averaged 1.044m from 6.30pm to midnight, according to metro ratings from Oztam.

Meanwhile, Nine won the battle of the commercial broadcasters, averaging 738,000, ahead of Seven’s 578,000 and Ten’s 395,000. SBS averaged 120,000.

Among the infamous moments of the ngiht was the Nine panel’s cofnrontation with treasurer Wayne Swan.

In pay TV, Sky News averaged 65,000 for its Election 2010 Live programme. While this is lower than its free to air competitors, it was the 12th biggest pay TV audience of last week.

It was also the third biggest non-sport event on Pay TV – behind its coverage of the Brisbane election forum (92,000) and an episode of Miss Marple (75,000) on the 13th Street channel.
