The public broadcaster and Screen Australia have commissioned four new “distinctively Australian” shows in the wake of ongoing criticism over the lack of “recognisably Australian” children’s TV content.

According to the ABC, funding of Australian children’s content grew 39% last year.

ABC Director of entertainment and specialist content David Anderson said: “These new programs deliver on the ABC’s strategy of focusing on high-quality and distinctive Australian content to inform, entertain and inspire children of all ages.

Screen Australia head of production Sally Caplan added: “It’s vital that young Australians are able to see their country, their stories and hear their accent reflected on the screen, so we are incredibly proud to be working with the ABC on this significant slate of children’s programs.”

The following shows are now currently in production:

The InBESTigators: A children’s detective whodunnit produced by Gristmill for ABC TV and Netflix.

Hardball: Alive action comedy series set in Western Sydney, produced by Northern Pictures.

100% Wolf : A Flying Bark production for ABC about an 11-year-old boy who turns into a poodle

Mustangs FC Season 2 – A Matchbox Productions comedy show about the challenges facing young girls in Australia.
