ABC appoints Rick Kalowski head of comedy

RickRick Kalowski the co‐creator and executive producer of political comedy At Home with Julia has been appointed ABC TV’s new head of comedy.

Currently the creative director for production house Quail Television Kalowski will take up the role in the second half of 2013.

“We’re delighted Rick is joining ABC TV as Head of Comedy. He is passionate about Australian comedy and brings considerable creative skills and experience to the role,” said Carole Sklan, ABC TV’s head of drama.

Kalowski has been a writer other leading Australian comedies including Comedy Inc., Big Bite which starred Chris Lilley and The Honourable Wally Norman. He has also developed comedy pilots for 20th Century Fox Television in the US, and for the BBC in Britain.

“Rick has written and produced hours of sketch and narrative comedy. He also has a background in the law which seems to have only enhanced his sense of humour,” said Sklan, in reference to Kalowski’s training as a lawyer.

The new head of comedy said he was honoured by the appointment. “The ABC’s greatest comedy shows have been foundation experiences in my life, both as a viewer and a writer, and the opportunity to help continue that tradition is truly a privilege. Hopefully I don’t wreck the joint”, said Kalowski.

He replaces Debbie Lee who left the ABC late last year to take a role in a production house.
