ABC Australia and CCTV China join forces for pre-school TV co-production

ABC Australia and CCTV China announced joint pre-school TV co-production

The announcement:

After three years in development, filming has begun in Beijing for Hoopla Doopla, the latest co-production between ABC Children’s Television and China’s national broadcaster CCTV.

Created in Australia, Hoopla Doopla is an innovative 52 x 12 minute live-action, non-verbal comedy series for preschoolers in which six loveable characters tumble, juggle, leap and somersault into and out of trouble.

The production features a cast and production team from both countries, including an Australian and a Chinese director. The series will be filmed over six months on a specially-designed studio set with circus elements built into each section of the set.

To celebrate the series, ABC Chairman, The Hon. James Spigelman AC QC and ABC Managing Director, Mark Scott, together with Australian Embassy Second Secretary, Jennifer Mason, attended a ceremony hosted by CCTV Editor in Chief, Lou Ming, at the CCTV Studio.

Tim Brooke-Hunt, ABC’s Controller of Children’s TV, said: “We are delighted to extend our relationship with our friends at CCTV through this exciting new co-production.”

The series was created by Melinda Wearne, and will be produced by Beyond Screen Production and the China Television Drama Production Centre. The Australian Children’s Television Foundation will distribute the series internationally.

Hoopla Doopla will screen on ABC4Kids in 2014.
