ABC beats Ten for fourth time this week

For the fourth time since the post-Easter ratings period began six days ago on Sunday 23 May, the national broadcaster has commanded a higher average audience share than the embattled Ten network.

The first Friday of the ratings period following the Easter break saw Seven definitively win the night with a 22.4% audience share, according to OzTam’s preliminary overnight metro ratings. Nine came in second with 16.1%, ahead of the ABC’s 11.5% and Ten’s 9.8%. 

Even once the network’s multi-channel offeringswere factored into the equation, the ABC remained ahead with 16.2%, compared to Ten’s 15.9%. Seven’s channels had a 33.1% share and Nine’s 27.7%.

SBS’ main station had a 5.6% share and across all its channels it had 7.0%.

For the second consecutive night, Ten managed to scrape into the top 10 programs. After the second half hour of The Project pulled 579,000 on Thursday placing it in 10th spot, Friday night’s The Living Room also placed 10th with 514,000.

Since this ratings season commenced, The Project’s second half hour at 7pm has largely been Ten’s most-watched program. In addition to being the network’s most-watched show on Thursday, it was also Ten’s most-viewed program on Wednesday (in 12th spot overall with 579,000 metro viewers); Tuesday (12th spot, 620,000 viewers); and Monday (13th spot, 552,000 viewers). On Sunday, Ten’s most-watched program was Modern Family, which placed 13th with 332,000.

On Friday night, Seven News topped the ladder with 921,000 across the five metro markets, ahead of Nine’s news offering with 858,000. The second half hour of Seven News/Today Tonight had 851,000, compared to Nine’s 6:30pm viewer numbers of 847,000.

The most-watched non-news or current affairs program was Seven’s Better Homes and Gardens which saw 610,000 tune in, placing it in seventh position for the evening.

The other non-news programs to make the top 10 were Seven’s The Chase Australia in 8th with 568,000; ABC’s The River with 536,000 in 9th; and The Living Room.

Once regional figures were added to the mix, Seven News increased its lead over Nine News – with Seven and its affiliate stations pulling 1.512m putting it in first place for its first half hour , and Nine News pulling 865,000 for the first half hour. In the second half hour Seven News/Today Tonight at 6:30pm had 1.320m and Nine News had 856,000.

Better Homes and Gardens jumped to third place with 1.088m and The Chase Australia ranked fourth with 971,000. The Living Room remained in 10th with 735,000 national viewers.
