ABC and Nine top election viewing but Seven’s AFL game draws biggest audience
The AFL proved to be more of a draw than coverage of the federal election for viewers in Melbourne and Adelaide on Saturday night.
According to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTAM, a total of 477,000 viewers in Melbourne tuned in for the Collingwood- Port Adelaide game and a further 174,000 in Adelaide. In both cities, the game was the most watched programme of Saturday. The game picked up a further 172,000 viewers on 7Mate in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.
Meanwhile, across the five capital cities, Seven News was the top show of the day, rating an average audience of 1.006m.
Next came Nine News on 884,000. However Nine News easily won in Sydney and Melbourne.
Nine also won the election boasting rights with Australia Decides the most viewed election coverage by metro audiences, rating 672,000.
ABC1’s Australia Votes wasn’t far behind on 631,000. It also beat Nine in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. This was simulcast with ABC News 24, where it received a further 338,000 – one of the channel’s biggest shares since launch.
The ABC said in a statement that Australia Votes total national and regional reach across the two channels was 5.3m, with a national average of 1.5m
Ten’s The Election Project averaged 306,000.
You probably have the wrong AFL game in your opening paragraph as Carlton Richmod is being played now (Sun afternoon)

Hi John,
Thanks for the heads-up – now fixed.
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
Clearly not AFL fans at Mumbrella – the Saturday night game was Collingwood vs. Port Adelaide (which probably explains those state-based ratings)

What does that say about Australians? Football more important than a Federal election. We are doomed.
