ABC podcast research reveals high engagement by Australian listeners

Research conducted ahead of the OzPod 2016 podcasting conference has found that Australians are not only listening to more podcasts each week, but are listening for longer periods of time.

The ABC Audience Insight Survey, conducted on the ABC Yourspace platform in August, suggests an increase in podcast listeners, with engagement at 5.5 podcasts per week per respondent.

The survey, completed by more than 1100 Australians, offers new insights on Australian listening habits, the results also finding 80% of podcast audiences listen to a podcast to the end.

Linda Bracken, ABC Radio head of content and digital, said: “Podcast audiences are telling us they’re listening more and they’re listening longer.”

“And it’s great to see the level of discovery that is happening, with one in three respondents trying new podcasts each week. We know that better content, more awareness and easier access are the factors driving the growth in listening.”

The insights also found news, current affairs and politics as the preferred genre of most listeners at 59%. Other results include 76% of listeners using podcasts at home in the past month, and 47% of podcasters listening in the evening, in the last week.

The new findings have been unveiled the same day as Qantas’ announcement of its partnership with independent Australian health and wellness podcast, Slow Home, which will feature on the airline’s inflight entertainment from October.

Bracken added: “This kind of podcast insight is very difficult to access in Australia so we’re pleased to have it; one of the issues for discussion at OzPod 2016 will be accurate and timely metrics for the benefit of the entire podcast industry.”
