ABC’s Osman Faruqi and Ruby Jones join Schwartz Media’s 7am podcast

ABC Life deputy editor Osman Faruqi and reporter and Unravel: Barrenjoey Road host Ruby Jones are joining the team at Schwartz Media, working on the publisher’s daily news podcast 7am.

Faruqi will take on the role of editor for the podcast while Jones will be host. Their appointments will commence in 2020.

Jones has been with the ABC since 2012, working on the national reporting team and hosting the seven-part podcast series Unravel: Barrenjoey Road. She is also currently working on a book inspired by the series and was a finalist for best radio feature in the 2019 Walkley Awards.

Alongside his role as deputy editor on ABC Life, Faruqi is also an award-winning reporter with ABC’s Background Briefing, the former political editor of Junkee and is currently writing a book on racism and the far-right in Australia.

Regarding her appointment, Jones said she was excited to be joining the new lineup on 7am.

“I’m looking forward to joining Schwartz Media as the new host of 7am. I’m so excited to be part of the team and build on the insightful, smart and relevant news and analysis that 7am delivers every morning,” said Jones.

Faruqi said it was an honour to join the podcast team and that he looked forward to the future of the project.

“The Monthly and The Saturday Paper publish some of the best journalism and in-depth analysis in the country, and I’m incredibly excited about helping bring those stories to more people in an innovative format,” he said.

“I’ve been a big fan of 7am since it launched, and have been lucky enough to be a guest on it once already. The team has done a brilliant job in creating a new journalism product that is already resonating strongly with audiences and I can’t wait to help take it to the next level.”

Jones replaces current host Elizabeth Kulas who is leaving the podcast at the end of the year to explore other projects. The podcast also lost producer Eliza Berlage earlier this year, but appointed Elle Marsh shortly after. Emile Klien, Ruby Schwartz, Michelle Macklem and Atticus Bastow are also currently listed as producers on the project.

Schwartz Media editor in chief Erik Jensen, who has edited 7am since its inception, called Jones and Faruqi two of the ‘most exciting’ journalists working today.

“Ruby Jones and Osman Faruqi are two of the most exciting journalists working today. Together they will deepen the way 7am tells stories, and stretch the scope of what we do on the podcast. They think about Australia the way it needs to be thought about, and will be a key part of your morning routine.”

Regarding Kulas, Jensen thanks her for her work with the podcast.

“Elizabeth Kulas did an extraordinary job helping to launch 7am – and I can’t wait to see what she does next.”

7am launched in May and Schwartz Media has reported more than 2.5m downloads since.
