ABC’s triple j to launch Hottest 100 station next week

ABC’s triple j is launching a Hottest 100 station next Monday, dedicated to the annual music countdown.

The announcement:

Strap in, triple j’s 24/7 Hottest 100 station is coming on 17 July!

Yes, triple j Hottest is a brand new station and your go-to for more than 30 years of Hottest 100 content – it’s an opportunity to revisit the music that has soundtracked your life, from music festivals to house parties, late nights and firsts.

In case you need a refresher, the Hottest 100 is triple j’s annual music countdown where people around the country and across the globe vote for their favourite songs of the year.

Over time, that countdown has become an institution – an event that millions of people tune in for and enjoy, whether that’s at home on the couch, or out at a party.

Recent winners of the poll have included Flume, The Wiggles and Glass Animals, but the Hottest 100 has propelled artists into bigger spotlights and is steeped in history.

Double J has built a ritual of its own, revisiting and broadcasting countdowns from decades past alongside triple j’s annual countdown. Earlier this year, the station looked back to 2002, uncovering the biggest songs and stories from the poll.

Remember when Spiderbait became the first Australian artist to top the countdown in 1996? Or when Powderfinger went back-to-back in 99/00? What about when Wolfmother swept in the 2005 countdown with six songs (which Spacey Jane equalled in January)? Or when Billie Eilish made history in the 2019 poll to become the first female solo artist to top the countdown?

Now, you’ll be able to listen back to all the music from each of these countdowns, and hear the stories that accompany them.

How does it work?

triple j Hottest a 24/7 music stream that runs uninterrupted and includes tracks from every annual Hottest 100 countdown, as well as the Hottest 100 of All-Time countdowns, the 2011 Hottest 100 of Australian Albums, the Hottest 100 of the Decade (2010s), and the Hottest 100 of Like A Version. If triple j’s had a Hottest 100 countdown, its tracks will feature in here somewhere, at some point.

You’ll also get to hear archival interviews, Hottest 100 history, stories and updates from artists you haven’t heard from in a while, and more.

It’s a chance to celebrate the classics, the forgotten, the funny, the reclaimed and the recent. It’s a chance to learn more about the days of Hottest 100s past, or to reflect and remember where you were and what you were doing when these songs were played on the station.

Hell, if you just want a place to listen to uninterrupted music at any time of the day or night that’s guaranteed to span decades and genres, this is the place to be. You don’t need to do anything except listen and enjoy.

triple j Hottest launches Monday, 17 July on the triple j app.
