ACP Magazines to cut jobs ahead of new financial year
ACP Magazines is believed to have cut a handful of jobs in the approach to the 2011-12 financial year, The Australian has reported.
ACP managing director Phil Scott told Mumbrella:
ACP has maintained a very strong employment for the last couple of years. We’re going through an end of financial year review and the numbers involved are less than one per cent of total headcount and most companies do that routinely so we’re no exception in tightening conditions. It’s by no means a major move such as those that Fairfax have made and I believe Pacific made prior to Christmas.
He was quoted in the paper as saying the job losses were “not substantial” and were “a normal part of business”.
He added that the issues facing magazines were cyclical rather than structural and the changes were “well communicated” to staff.
If by cyclical you mean downward spiral, then sure…

Why doesn’t The Australian report on the hundred plus editorial staff News Ltd has quietly cut across the country in the last couple of years? These are people with vast experience in all sorts of roles – reporting, feature writing, photography, subbing and editing. Is it any wonder that their state based tabloids now look like comics. The only ones who seem to be immune are the business and political drones on The Australian who know only too well their purpose in life is to push Rupert’s agenda where it matters most – in Canberra and at the big end of town.

I’m sure “not substantial” and “a normal part of business” will be comforting words to the people affected and their families.
