ACP returns to Magazine Publishers of Australia

ACP Magazines’ new boss Phil Scott took just two hours from the announcement of his appointment to reveal that he is taking the company back into trade body Magazine Publishers of Australia.

ACP left the organisation – which represents Australia’s largest consumer publishers – early last year. It was seen as a money-saving move as parent company PBL and ACP cut deeply as the media downturn kicked in. However, it also coincided with the MPA deciding to initially back a move by Newspaper Works to develop a new readership metric which ACP opposed. The MPA later pulled out of the readership process anyway.

ACP’s departure from the association saw the death of the MPA Awards, which had been widely seen as one of the major nights of the magazine industry’s year.

The return of ACP to the fold raises the question of whether the MPA Awards may now be resurrected. Scott said tonight:

“There is a great story to tell on the vibrancy of the magazine business and I believe ACP can and should bring its considerable resources to bear, helping the MPA to tell that story.”

Nick Chan, MPA chairman and boss of rival publisher Pacific Magazines, said: “We are thrilled to have ACP Magazines back in the MPA and we look forward to working with all the member publishers on new initiatives to promote magazines. Now more than ever, the value of engaged consumers willing to purchase their favourite magazines needs to be communicated.”
