Ad watchdog rules against another ‘obscene’ Wicked Campers slogan
For the third time in a matter of weeks Wicked Campers has fallen foul of the Advertising Standards Board (ASB) over the slogan “Does your asshole ever get jealous of the shit that comes out of your mouth?” on one of its vans which the ASB ruled was derogatory, adding the obscene language was not appropriate for outdoor display.
At the end of last month the brand was reprimanded by the watchdog for a slogan reading “Get out ya tits and we’ll call it quits” while just this week the ASB upheld a complaint relating to the slogan “fat girls are harder to kidnap!”. It has also been censured by the ASB for a Chuck Norris blowjob message, a pot smoking promo, “it’s better to be black than gay“,encouraging killing kangaroos, a menstrual cycle joke and snogging an aboriginal.
A complaint to the advertising watchdog read: “Offensive slogan on the back of the car. Use of explicit swear words “asshole and shit” clearly visible to everyone including children. Completely pointless – just put there to deliberately offend/shock. I’m no prude but this disgusted me and my wife.”
Wicked Campers no longer responds to complaints to the ASB, which was noted by the board during the ruling.
While the board noted the words “asshole” and “shit” are not “strong or obscene”, the board considered that “the overall message is derogatory and the wording of the advertisement presents obscene language which is not appropriate for outdoor display”.
As the advertisement “did feature language which is inappropriate in the circumstance” the board upheld the complaint.
Your coverage of this series is the goal ….and the ball is in the back of the net, again.
I swear a lot (in text only), but don’t enjoy such coverage.
Perhaps I should complain about myself to the ASB ?
Love George.

I think the messaging is funny and spot on for their target market.
It’s a shame that a few prudes (yes, the complainant clearly is one) can make the outdoor advertising space so dull.

The messaging is not funny at all although it does hit the dick head dude target market – and unfortunately everyone else. By the way my 12 year old is not a prude, he’s a kid who surprisingly likes to look out the window in the car -fancy that ! He would not find this funny if he saw it -he’s smarter than that.

Where is my choice in seeing offensive language? Where are children’s choices in seeing offensive language? If you want to use offensive language – go right ahead – but please have consideration for other people around you who may not want to hear or see it.
But really, that’s what it comes down to isn’t it? Pure selfishness. “I have the right to say or do anything I want in front of other people. I have the right to use offensive and/or shocking phrases and comments just to get people’s attention. I have the right to do or say anything inappropriate in front of children.”

It is offensive and most of these slogans are derogatory towards women. Thought we had grown up as a society but this company and it’s supporters leave me feeling dejected. If billboard advertising was offensive as these slogans used by Wicked there would be a huge negative reaction. Grow up Wicked!

Wickeds slogans are totally unacceptable for public display. They are designed to shock and offend which they achieve. I am at a loss to understand how they are allowed to get away with it.
