AFL grand final becomes most watched show of the year so far but down on 2014 numbers
The AFL grand final has become the most watched show of the year so far with an average metro audience of 2.635m viewers.
The historic victory for Hawthorn just beat the second State of Origin match in the major cities, which got 2.616m viewers on June 18.
However the audience is down on last year where 2.813m viewers tuned in to the game.
It is also down when regional and peak audiences are added in, with a combined metro and regional average of 3.523m viewers according to OzTam overnight ratings. Last year that figure was 3.718m.
Melbourne was by far the biggest market with an average of 1.231m, while 456,000 watched in Perth.
The OzTam system does not take into account viewers watching out of home, while this year the game was simulcast on Channel Seven and high definition channel 7Mate.
Peak combined audience was 3.989m, with Seven claiming an audience viewing share of 81.6 per cent during the match, and 26.6 per cent for the day.
This may have been the most watched show of the year but what a missed opportunity. – Apart from NAB the majority of comms were terrible. Ads in break were just run of the mill and nothing special and most of the in program sponsorship was clumsy and over the top.

The match wasn’t a close one. I switched off just as the second quarter began. I would have thought this would have been to the detriment of ratings.
What was the ratings split between 7 and 7mate?

Hi Aaron,
Unfortunately they don’t provide a breakdown of those numbers.
